Is there some permission that allows users to update this area of AD themselves? Because I feel like that's what I'm missing.Outlook Web App or your domain OWA. She does not so I'm assuming this is where the certificate would go if and when it gets published. Users who are able to manually publish their own CAC card certificates to the GAL have certificates in the "Published Certificates" tab of their AD profile. However I just stumbled on something inside AD.

EDIT: Trying to update the certificate from another PC throws the same error, even though this is a fresh install, more or less, so that did not help. I haven't logged into her computer myself, though. I think it is an OS problem myself (I suspect the PC she's using was not properly deployed as I have noticed several 'lazy' system deployments in our office since I've started here) but now isn't the time to be tearing things down to rebuild them, unfortunately (we don't keep static system images or anything like that on hand). If that's all that's required to make her able to digitally sign emails from any machine then it seems like the best workaround for the time being.

We have plenty of spare laptops, it'll be no issue to just take one and have her log in as herself and install Outlook to publish. I will try a new PC to publish the certs next.

I simply hooked up the card reader to my own PC and walked through the steps to see if I would be able to publish anything at all or if there was a certification problem with her card (there is not but I stopped before the last step of publication so it wouldn't associate her credentials with my own). Doing this is the necessary first step to publish the certs to the GAL. If it does work then I would suggest wiping her user profile and starting over.Īs far as security info, I meant registering the hashes from the security certificates stored on the CAC cards (by clicking "Settings" under "Email Settings" in the Trust Center in Outlook and registering the hashes there). Have you tried logging into her machine to see if you can use the sign/encrypt buttons? If not then you definitely need to start with repairing Outlook/windows at that point. I take it you have tried to have her use a different computer to publish the certs? Also as long as they are published for her login it doesn't matter what computer it is done on because the published cert, the public key, is what is being stored in the GAL and used for sign/encrypt. What do you mean that you tried to publish her certificates using your own account?


What do you mean that you are putting in the security info? i'm not sure exactly how all the backend is setup but I know that you have to go into your outlook settings and click publish certs, is this where you are getting stuck? If the certs are not published then you cannot use the sign/encrypt functions in Outlook. When a new cert is issued the public certificate needs to be published to the GAL in order for people to send encrypted emails to the individual and for him/her to sign emails. So from what I imagine is happening here you have PKI certs used with AD and Exchange. Hi, I'd be happy to help you out more with this.
